CONTRIBUTION OF OIL SPILLAGE TO ENVIRONMENTAL PROBLEMS

  • Oil spillage has various adverse affects on the living organisms on this globe.
  • The affects may be classified into two main categories
    • Short term
    • Long term
  • Source for this oil:
    • Damaged oil tankers
    • Damged pipelines
    • Many other human activities
  • Effects:
    • Marine eco-system is hamppered
    • Damages beaches, marshlands
    • It enters the food chain and remains for long period in this globe affecting various living organisms
    •
  • What happens when oil spills?
    • The main thing is that it will act as an covering sheet over the ocean or any water body, which wont allow the sun rays deep into the water body.
    • This in turn will cause death of various marine flora & fauna which are at the deepr part of the water body.
    • These dead matter will increase in the water body which absorbs ample amount of oxygen & liberates carbon dioxide in the water.
    • Therefore due to lack of proper oxygen supply the whole marine ecosystem will be disturbed greatly.
    • Along with this, the birds, animals & humans who consume such affected products will thus be affected. This will continue in the food chain, there by causing huge loss.
    • This way we will lose various ecosystem, rare species, beaches etc.
